Abalone shell that has been taken out of the ocean since humans
began to consume the animal would probably reach to the moon and
back if stacked up one on top of the other. The only problem is
that we haven't been letting them stack up under the ocean until
only very small spaces remained between each abalone shell.
This is how they once were found in most every part of the ocean
where the creatures flourished. Abalone shell was as common to
find on the beach as finely smoothed chunks of glass are now.
Nowadays finding an abalone shell on your morning walk is a freak
occurrence, one worthy of recounting to anyone who is wiling to
listen. Shards and fragments may show up here and there, but a
whole shell is nearly unheard of.
