Well, down on the old abalone farm, Maw and Jorsh are headin' into
town with Fibber the mule and a wagon to pick up some supplies
from old Dev Shanson's place, tryin' to get back before nightfall
for evenin' feedin' time. Bubba says he remembers when there was
no abalone farm around these parts, just a rocky cove and a whole
lotta seaweed flappin' in the waves. Sometimes wish we could see
it like how it was back then, but that ain't how things are.
Paw says our little abalone farm is the key to future of this
family. It'll help Henry go the big college back east, and give
little Emma the money she'll need to start up the bed and breakfast
she's been dreamin' about. Maw told us runnin' an abalone farm
would be a whole lotta hard work, until we thought it would never
end, but that we'd all be glad about it in the end. Aunt Pol said
it best though, she said takin' care of an abalone farm is like
tendin' a garden of rare flowers, except when they bloom the
flowers look like rocks and smell just like fish. Aunt Pol always
knows what to say.
