Abalone is a word probably very seldom heard in most households
unless you live by the coast of Australia or South Africa, or
Northern California. Quite nearly as unlikely is an abalone
sighting for most people in the world unless a National Geographic
special comes out about them, or they come across it by chance in a
dictionary or magazine.
Amazingly enough, however, those relatively few dedicated abalone
fans scattered about the world are enough to have nearly wiped out
the abalone population in more than a few areas around the globe.
They were here around two hundred and seventy million years before
us, but the abalone never saw anything like us before, and as our
population has expanded, theirs has steadily decreased.
